CASTE-The Origins of our Discontent

Tuesday June 23 - July 28 | 6 week class on ZOOM ONLY. Tuesdays 6:30-8:30 pm Led by Sharon Mitchell (bio below) $100 in advance $20/class It has been five years since our first deep dive into Caste, The Origins of Our Discontents by Pulitzer Prize winning author Isabel Wilkerson. So much has happened in those five years. The book remains as relevant now as it was when it was written in 2020…and as important to unpack as it was when we did the book study during the pandemic in 2021. It’s critical in understanding why we are where we are and how we got here. This book details the hidden caste system which has shaped American history since its founding. This book is a hard read and portions are bound to have an impact on you as they did me. One dear friend told me sections were very uncomfortable to read. I agree and yet I believe this book should be required reading for anyone who is struggling with how we got to where we are today and what we can do about it. As Reverend Lisa says, “Life begins at the end of our comfort zone.” Let’s take a breath, dive in once again and be uncomfortable together as we move toward a greater understanding of the origins of our discontents.
Sharon has been a member of Unity Spiritual Center of Portland for more than 15 years. Over the years she has served as a board member, worked with Unity youth, facilitated book studies, helped facilitate anti-racism
workshops and has been invited to share personal insights as a guest speaker on Sunday mornings.
